Allen Iverson had every reason to feel good after his performance kept Philadelphia close to the division lead.
Surely the mood changed when the Sixers All-Star found out he was injured.
Iverson outperformed Kobe Bryant, scoring 36 points and leading a decisive third-quarter run in the 76ers' 108-91 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.
Iverson helped pull the Sixers (31-33) to four games of Boston for first place in the Atlantic Division.
"It made me feel good," Iverson said. "Any win makes me feel good."
Iverson, though, chipped a bone in his left thumb sometime in the second half and will be fitted for a cast. He is day-to-day. The Sixers said Iverson will be re-evaluated Friday when they play again at Cleveland.
Iverson left the arena before the injury was announced.
The Sixers certainly need the league's leading scorer if they're going to make any kind of run at the Celtics.
"We would like to have that (winning) streak right now," said Iverson, before he knew the X-ray results.
Andre Iguodala scored 15 points for the Sixers, adding a few more spectacular dunks, including an alley-oop where he came crashing down on Jumaine Jones. Kyle Korver had 14.
Bryant -- who came in trailing Iverson by nearly two points in the league scoring race -- led the Lakers with 20 points, but had little help. The Lakers (32-31) fell out of the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference.
Bryant made five of nine shots in the first quarter, but went 1-for-6 the rest of the game.
"We've got to get more people involved," Bryant said. "They were doubling me and the shots weren't falling."
Iguodala had plenty to do with that. The Sixers rookie kept a hand in Bryant's face most of the game and aggressively contested his shots. Iguodala said he watched plenty of tape to prepare for one of his toughest assignments.
"I knew if I kept my hands up and kept nagging him a little bit that I could make him take a tougher shot," Iguodala said.
Bryant scored 16 points in the first quarter and Iverson had 14 as the two seemed poised for a one-on-one showdown between All-Stars. But Bryant slowed down, thanks largely to the sticky defense by Iguodala, while Iverson kept driving and crashing.
Iverson scored 14 points during a 26-9 run in the third quarter by doing what he does best -- drive the lane, look for the layup and get to the line. When he couldn't do that, Iverson would dribble around the perimeter until he found an open look.
He took six of Philadelphia's 16 shots in the third (making three) and went 7-for-7 from the line. Overall, Iverson went 14-for-15 from the line and 10-for-22 from the floor.
On one fallaway layup from the right side, Iverson was fouled by Chucky Atkins. Atkins bitterly complained and was hit with two quick technicals and ejected from the game.
Korver sank the two free throws for a 66-50 lead. Rodney Rogers hit a 3-pointer near the end of the third, giving Philadelphia a 28-point lead.
Chris Webber again was a non-factor for the Sixers. He scored Philly's first two baskets of the game, sat out 5 minutes of the second quarter and missed his last six shots for five points.
Webber remained baffled as to why he has looked little like the five-time All-Star he was in Sacramento. Of course, watching Iverson take a bulk of the shots and not having coach Jim O'Brien call plays for Webber might have something do with his struggles.
"I don't want to put my finger on it," Webber said. "It's not because it's late in the season. I didn't become this player in one day."
Game notes
Bryant, who went to nearby Lower Merion High School, needed about 30 tickets. Among those invited were players on this year's Merion team and his former coach, Gregg Downer. Lower Merion plays in the Class AAAA state semifinals Wednesday night. Bryant said he loved playing in Philadelphia, even though he's always booed. "If I played here, they'd love it with the Philly attitude I have," he said. "But I enjoy coming here because of that." ... The Sixers are 17-10 when Iverson scores 30 or more points

News broke that Pistons star Allen Iverson has cut off his trademark braids.
Of course, the Internet has since been abuzz with discussion of Iverson's new look.
Shaq went as far as calling it "cute" (an odd choice of words if you ask me).
So why is the media covering this story, showing video clips of Iverson's new look? Why are there some 20 blog posts on the subject, even though it happened just yesterday?
I can't answer all these questions. But I can tell you why I'm writing this particular article.
The Questions that Led to "The Answer"
Growing up in Philadelphia, my favorite sports were hockey, basketball and baseball.
The Sixers were and will always be my favorite team. As I was growing up, guys like Dr. J and Moses Malone were my heroes.
Then came Sir Charles Barkley. I definitely recognized his greatness, but never did I idolize him like Malone and Erving.
Then, those lean years for the Sixers came. If you're a Sixers fan, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Shawn Bradley and Reese Witherspoon were our "stars".
Oh wait, I have Reese confused with someone...
I have to be honest, it was tough to stick with the team through that era.
I stopped watching. Management and owners seemed to care less about putting a winning team on the court and more about the bottom line.
It was a bad period from 1992 to 1996.
I actually stopped caring, and I hate to say it, but a lot of other Philadelphians did too. If you think I'm exaggerating, ponder this fact:
The Sixers couldn't even sell out the Spectrum at the time, nor could they unload season tickets.
Then that fateful day came: the day Allen Iverson was drafted by the 76ers.
He may have not have won an NBA championship for Philly during his tenure here, but he did something no other star or player since Dr. J had done.
He reinvigorated the fan base and recaptured the love for the Sixers. He got the entire city to care again.
By his second year, Iverson had the whole town talking. It soon became popular again proclaim your fandom. Even people from other cities were wearing Iverson jerseys.
Then the celebs starting coming to Sixers games: I remember seeing Will Smith at the game after Thanksgiving Day in 1997, against the Lakers. The place was packed with a sell-out crowd, and you could feel the electricity.
AI had even put a disenchanted fan like me back into the Sixers' fold. He had made basketball in Philly exciting again.
The Questions Came with "The Answer"
Yet somewhere along the line, as the years passed, the love affair between Philly and Allen ended. Like so many other times with countless other players, the fickle fans of Philadelphia chased yet another star out of their city.
The list of such victims is as long as you can imagine.
Eric Lindros, Randall Cunningham, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, more Phillies than I care to remember...sadly, Iverson became just one more on that list.
But I still thank the man for bringing me back to Sixers basketball.
What made Iverson so special at the time was he was different, from the cornrows to the tattoos to the extra-long shorts. Iverson was always true to himself.
I'm sure the corporate types of the NBA were having nightmares, but the fact of the matter is fans from all over the world embraced Iverson.
I got so tired of hearing statements like "he's a hoodlum" based solely upon his appearance. I'll tell you as a Caucasian that Iverson having cornrows and tattoos didn't make me think he was a thug. I hated that the media thought they could speak for others.
I remember having a Iverson poster up on my wall in 1997, when I was in college. I remember my best friend coming over and, noticing the poster, sarcastically saying:
"What, is Iverson your homeboy?"
"No," I replied, "Iverson is 'The Man'."
I can't imagine the prejudice Iverson faced through his life or because of his color and image. But I know just how stupid and prejudiced some people acted towards me for being a fan of his.
What I respected the most about Iverson was that he was true to himself and was loyal to his family and friends, even when the media was tearing him apart for his loyalty. He was the real deal on and off the court.
Even when Iverson got in trouble with the police here in Philly (some story of him looking for his wife and pulling a gun on someone at a door), I stood by him and never wavered.
I saw the big picture: So many people wanted a piece of him, hangers-on and people thinking they could make a quick buck at his expense. And I hated that the media used his image agaisnt him every time something bad happened in his personal life.

Allen Iverson finally came up with an outstanding offensive performance, just in time for the Philadelphia 76ers' first loss of the season.
Iverson scored 46 points, nearly equaling his total during the 76ers' 3-0 start, but Malik Rose atoned for poor performances by David Robinson and Tim Duncan to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 98-94 victory.
Rose, who attended Drexel, minutes away from the First Union Center, scored a career-high 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds as the Spurs snapped a three-game losing streak.
"My teammates were getting me the ball," said Rose, who bought 64 tickets for family and friends. "We played well, we shared the ball and I was the recipient of some good passes and a little luck."
Iverson was a dismal 15-of-55 (27 percent) from the field and averaged 16.7 points as Philadelphia got off to a 3-0 start, its best since the 1984-85 campaign. It was a different Iverson in this contest as he dominated on the offensive end and came within four points of a career high, hitting 14-of-26 from the floor and 15-of-17 from the foul line.
"It would have been better to have a one-point performance and win than having a 40-point game and lose," said Iverson, who added seven rebounds and six assists.
Rose, whose previous career best was 14 points, was the surprising hero as Robinson and Duncan battled foul trouble. Robinson, who picked up his fifth foul early in the third quarter, was 3-of-8 from the field and just 9-of-18 from the foul line to finish with 15 points and eight rebounds. Duncan fouled out with 1:59 to play with 15 points and six boards.
"We can't keep putting this kind of pressure on the supporting cast," Robinson said. "We've played some good ball, it's just that we've turned the ball over at times and have not shot as well as we would have liked. It took a total team effort to scrap this one out."
Clinging to a 61-57 lead midway through the third, the Spurs took control with a 15-4 run to end the period. Duncan's jumper triggered the burst before Rose converted a three-point play. Late in the quarter, Rose buried a 14-footer and put home a dunk before Sean Elliott's free throw made it 75-61.
"He (Rose) is one of the hardest working players on our team," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "He's on the verge of finding his place in the NBA. I'm thrilled he was able to have this kind of game in his hometown."
The margin was 82-69 with just over nine minutes left when Iverson, who had just three turnovers, led a 22-9 tear that tied it. Iverson drained a 3-pointer in transition to make it 88-84 before an 18-footer by Harvey Grant forced the Spurs to call timeout with 4:11 to go. After Robinson made 1-of-2 free throws, Iverson sank a pair, trimming the deficit to 89-88.
Elliott drained a long jumper, but Iverson followed with a foul shot off an illegal defense and hit two more that tied it, 91-91, as Duncan fouled out.
Another free throw by Robinson put the Spurs back in front and, after Iverson missed a 3-pointer, Avery Johnson sank two free throws. Iverson hit again from the foul line after another illegal defense call, making it 94-92 with 45 seconds left.
Matt Geiger then had a chance to tie it, but Rose forced a jump ball as the Sixers center went inside for a layup. The 7-1 Geiger won the jump over the smaller Rose, but Iverson drove into two players and turned it over.
Johnson blew a pair of free throws, but Rose grabbed the offensive rebound on the second miss with 8.1 seconds left. Steve Kerr sank two foul shots for a 96-92 lead, and after Snow followed a miss by Iverson, Elliott's two free throws sealed it with 2.6 seconds to go.
"When Pop (Popovich) needs me, I feel confident enough to go out and do the things I did tonight," Rose added. "I'm just a role player. When they need me, they just call me and I'll be ready."
Johnson scored 15 points and Elliott chipped in 13 for the Spurs, who shot an atrocious 28-of-51 from the foul line. They were outrebounded, 46-42, but owned a 52-24 advantage in points in the paint.
Rookie Larry Hughes came off the bench to score 12 points but hit just 3-of-12 shots and Philadelphia connected on a mediocre 39 percent (30-of-77) from the field. San Antonio shot 50 percent (34-of-68).
"If we came up with a loose ball, a rebound, or a (conversion) when we had the ball down low, things might have been a little different," said Sixers coach Larry Brown.
Iverson, who matched Detroit's Grant Hill for the most points in one game this season, set a First Union Center record by scoring 25 points in the first half.
"I was making layups early in the game, which made me feel good," Iverson added. "In previous games, I was missing shots early. So I was able to get into the flow early on."
